Game Non-Playable Characters Concept,

The NPC's that will be in my game will be Shop Keeper's, Quest Giver's, Castle Rox troop's and the enemies called Dusk Settler's.

Shop Keeper's, They allow the player to exchange currency for items, weapons or consumables.

Quest Giver's, They are how the player can progress through the game. Completing quests gives the player currency and experience points used to level up stats/attributes like health, stamina, strength etc...

Castle Rox Troop's, They are your allies whilst in combat with the Dusk Settler's. These troops can die in combat and if they do die they do not spawn again so you need to try and use them strategically. They are equipped with armour, a sword or bow and a shield.

Dusk Settler's, These are the enemies trying to capture Castle Rox and they are equipped with a variety of weapons, shields and armour. The armour isn't as protective as the Castles troops.

Game Feedback Concept,

The feedback that the player will receive will be a visible health bar, which will decrease by a certain percent if damage from enemies is taken. A sound will be played as well if you take damage. There is also a stamina bar, when attacking, the player can visibly see this bar decrease and increase after a certain amount of time has passed. An experience bar will only appear once the player has killed an enemy or completed a mission.

Once a quest has been completed, the words "Quest Completed" will be shown big on the screen. Equipped items, consumables, weapons and shields will have a yellow selection border around it to show the player what is equipped and what isn't.

Equipment Selection Boxes, Equipment Selection Boxes will appear on the bottom left side of the screen.

Currency Counter, A currency counter will appear on the bottom right of the screen.

Game Perspectives Concept,

The game will be top down with a slight angle to allow the player to see the enemies and architecture with greater ease. Some games that use this perspective are as followed; The Binding of Issac Rebirth and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

The Binding of Issac Rebirth

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Game Full-Motion Video (FMV) Concept,

There will be a cutscene  at the intro of the game which tells the story of the character Tidus Flux. The cutscene would contain a set of clips of the castle and its surroundings slowly zooming out as there is a voice telling the player the story of the main character, Tidus Flux. After the cutscene is over the player can then play the game at will.

Task 1B - Game Genres

In this task, I am to explain the genres listed below and to give examples of each genre.

Genres,

Science Fiction/Adventure,

A Science Fiction game is a game were the setting is set either in a world that the technology is far more advanced . An adventure game is a game where the setting is based in a fantasy world where the player controls the protagonist and follows a set story. An example of this game is Destiny. This game is based in space and has a huge world to explore.

Racing,

The Racing genre is where the game is usually very competitive and usually the player controls a vehicle of some kind e.g. A Car, Motorcycle etc... An example of a racing game is Mario Kart, In this game your goal is to defeat all other opponents to achieve victory.

Sport,

Sport Games story-line's are usually to play as a certain team in a specific sport to rise in the league tables and try to become number #1. For example, Fifa is a game based of football and you play as a team to then try and be the best. You can play against or with other people to win games either online or LAN.

Survival/Horror,

Survival/Horror games usually consist of a very in-depth and immersive story. The aim of these games are to provoke fear into the player and to keep them on edge. An example of a Survival/Horror game is Outlast. In this game you play as a journalist, who is investigating a psychiatric hospital, You quickly find the horrors within and try to find an exit.

Third-Person Shooter,

A Third-Person Shooter (TPS) is a game which is the character is being observed by the player which helps narrate the story. Games that usually have this feature are adventure type games. Adventure games are enhanced with this feature are usually really fun because it is just fitting. E.G. Last of us and Skyrim.
First-Person Shooter,

A First-Person Shooter (FPS) is a game which means you are seeing your character from the first perspective. This normally results in you seeing the characters hand/weapons taking up quite a bit of your screen.

It lets the player feel immersed into the surrounding and makes them think they are the character they are playing as. This is normally used in fast paced games with a theme of war usually. So FPS inspires a story based on war and tragedy. E.G. Call of Duty and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Puzzle,

A Puzzle game is where the player is presented a challenge which they need to solve to get through the game Bejeweled is a puzzle game which requires you to create lines of three or more of the same colour to advance further into the game. The way you lose this game is by running out of time or running out of moves.

Management,

Management games usually consist of you managing NPC's lives and managing other things like economy, crime etc... An example of a management game would be Cities Skylines.

In this game you are to build a city from scratch and you are required to manage your money as well as your cities residents. If you don't take the residents into consideration then they will just leave your city and you will potentially fail the game.

Educational,

An educational game is there to educate the player in whatever subject the game is created for. Dr Kawashima Brain Training is a game on the Nintendo DS. This game is to help the player learn a range of subjects like Maths, English etc...

Task 1A - Game Elements

In this task I will explain the elements that are contained into a video game. They will also contain examples of games that have examples of each element.

Terrain,

Terrain is the world surface. This can be realistic ground like on earth or in a made up cartoon style game. An example of this is in BioShock Infinite, the terrain would be Colombia, the name of the place you are based in. Another example would be in Assassins Creed Brotherhood, the terrain is Rome.

Architecture,

Architecture is the environment within a game, more specifically the buildings around the level. An example of this is in BioShock Infinite, the architecture would be the buildings within the terrain of Colombia. Another example would be in Assassins Creed Brotherhood, the buildings would be the architecture.

Objects,

Objects are the objects in the game that the player can either see and/or interact with. An example of this is in Skyrim. You can pick objects up and move them around if the player chooses to do so.

Characters,

Characters are the models with a game that are made to look like a character whether that be to look like a human or to look like a creature of the imagination. An example of this is BioShock Infinite, the main character is named Booker Dewitt and you play as him throughout the game.

Non-Playable Characters,

NPC's or Non-Playable Characters are the characters within a game that you cannot control and play as. An example of this is in Skyrim, all the characters in this game apart from you're character are NPC's as you cannot play as them.

Feedback,

Feedback is when you use a device, like a controller, and a response of whatever button you press happens in-game. Another example is that when you press a key on a keyboard and the letter appears onscreen. The guitar for the game, Guitar Hero, is another example of feedback. When you press the colours in sequence to the screen and said response takes place.

Interface,

An interface is what you can see on the screen and from there you can do multiple different things. One example of this is in near enough every game you have a pause menu from here you can go into options, other tabs or even save/quit a game.

Perspectives,

Perspectives are the way of playing a game. Whether this being in First Person or Third Person. An example of this game is Call of Duty. This game is an FPS (First-Person Shooter), this means that you play from the eyes of the character you are playing as. As if you are the character.

Full-Motion Video (FMV),

Full Motion Video (FMV) is a technique for video game narrative. This uses pre-recorded video files to display action within a video game. An example of this is in Call of Duty. These have heavy emphases on the cutscenes or FMV to help make the story more immersive. This is making games to seem more like a movie than a game. These cutscenes usually happen at the start or end of a game or after each mission.
