Science Fiction/Adventure,
A Science Fiction game is a game were the setting is set either in a world that the technology is far more advanced . An adventure game is a game where the setting is based in a fantasy world where the player controls the protagonist and follows a set story. An example of this game is Destiny. This game is based in space and has a huge world to explore.
Racing,
The Racing genre is where the game is usually very competitive and usually the player controls a vehicle of some kind e.g. A Car, Motorcycle etc... An example of a racing game is Mario Kart, In this game your goal is to defeat all other opponents to achieve victory.
Sport,
Sport Games story-line's are usually to play as a certain team in a specific sport to rise in the league tables and try to become number #1. For example, Fifa is a game based of football and you play as a team to then try and be the best. You can play against or with other people to win games either online or LAN.
Survival/Horror,
Survival/Horror games usually consist of a very in-depth and immersive story. The aim of these games are to provoke fear into the player and to keep them on edge. An example of a Survival/Horror game is Outlast. In this game you play as a journalist, who is investigating a psychiatric hospital, You quickly find the horrors within and try to find an exit.
A Third-Person Shooter (TPS) is a game which is the character is being observed by the player which helps narrate the story. Games that usually have this feature are adventure type games. Adventure games are enhanced with this feature are usually really fun because it is just fitting. E.G. Last of us and Skyrim.
First-Person Shooter,
A First-Person Shooter (FPS) is a game which means you are seeing your character from the first perspective. This normally results in you seeing the characters hand/weapons taking up quite a bit of your screen.
It lets the player feel immersed into the surrounding and makes them think they are the character they are playing as. This is normally used in fast paced games with a theme of war usually. So FPS inspires a story based on war and tragedy. E.G. Call of Duty and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Puzzle,
A Puzzle game is where the player is presented a challenge which they need to solve to get through the game Bejeweled is a puzzle game which requires you to create lines of three or more of the same colour to advance further into the game. The way you lose this game is by running out of time or running out of moves.
Management,
Management games usually consist of you managing NPC's lives and managing other things like economy, crime etc... An example of a management game would be Cities Skylines.
In this game you are to build a city from scratch and you are required to manage your money as well as your cities residents. If you don't take the residents into consideration then they will just leave your city and you will potentially fail the game.
An educational game is there to educate the player in whatever subject the game is created for. Dr Kawashima Brain Training is a game on the Nintendo DS. This game is to help the player learn a range of subjects like Maths, English etc...
